When life hands you the wrong film, go to Venice.
Before heading to Italy this past September, the romantic in me bought a vintage polaroid camera to capture the beauty of Italy not only instantly, but physically – a retaliation against my iphone and photo apps. Unfortunately, I bought the wrong film. Instead of being a complete waste of precious suitcase space however, I found that the super sensitive 600-type film (over)exposed nuances of Venice that are not so apparent in our technicolor world: the softness of Venice's color palette and the striking contrast of the black, darting gondolas, the patterns produced by the deeply-set window frames lining the palazzi façades, the alternate universe proposed by Venice's reflecting canals, the city's serene nature even under the throngs of year-round tourists. But, above all, these polaroids managed to highlight that haunting quality which Venice exudes in all seasons, weather conditions, and times of day – the very one that infuses our dreams with its decadent decay and calls us back to its labyrinthine embrace for eternity.
